Video mapping
Video mapping on buildings, façades and architecture
Video mapping displays moving images that precisely match the shape of a building. It is impressive, but not always necessary. We help you choose between video mapping and simpler gobo projection.

What is video mapping?
Video mapping uses powerful video projectors and specially created animations. The images are digitally 'mapped' onto windows, mouldings and other façade details. This makes the building itself appear to move, change or tell a story.
The difference from gobo projection
A gobo projector displays a fixed image or a simple effect, using an optical lens and a straightforward setup. Video mapping displays moving, custom-made content and requires more: video projectors, a media server, content creation and technical support during the event.
Applications
- —City celebrations, festivals and anniversaries
- —Building openings and special events
- —Brand activations and product launches
- —Cultural and heritage projects
Who does what?
For video mapping, we work with specialist designers who create the animations. We provide advice on the projectors, the setup and the technical implementation. This gives you a team with expertise in both the creative and technical aspects.
What determines a video mapping project?
- —Size and shape of the building
- —Distance and possible projector locations
- —Ambient light and street lighting
- —Length and complexity of the animation
- —Power supply, permits and on-site safety
When should you choose gobo projection?
Want to illuminate a façade for weeks or months with a logo, snowflakes or an atmospheric pattern? Gobo projection often makes more financial sense: less equipment, no content production and little maintenance. Video mapping is better suited to a brief, large-scale moment that tells a story.
From briefing to delivery
- —Introduction and briefing: objective, location, date and budget
- —Site visit or analysis based on photos and plans
- —Proposal covering technology, content and scheduling
- —Content creation by the designer and technical preparation
- —Installation, adjustment and support during the event
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I plan video mapping?
Allow a few months, especially if new content needs to be created or permits are required. Be sure to contact us well in advance.
Is video mapping more expensive than gobo projection?
Usually, yes, due to content creation, video projectors and technical support. For long-term projections, gobo projection is often more cost-effective.
